City Park
V!VA User‘s Description
Guayaquil Historical Park is a great way to spend a really “touristy” day getting to know some of the city's history and a little of the coastal region's culture. The park is separated into three main sections: The Wildlife Zone, The Urban Architectural Zone, and The Traditions Zone. The Wildlife Zone consists of elevated paths that have allowed much of the natural plant-life to remain intact while creating areas for exhibit animals, such as tapir, caiman, deer, and sloths. The Urban Architectural Zone is inspired by the booming construction brought on at the beginning of the 20th Century, which also corresponded with Ecuador’s cacao boom. The Traditions Zone gives a glimpse at what life is like in rural parts of the coast, where people continue to live in bamboo homes.
Walk through an elevated house built to avoid the floods that affect most of the region during the rainy season, while also providing shelter for animals raised for food or sale. This area also includes the “Granja Urbana Solidaria” program, which promotes community and families working together to grow healthy produce and curative plants.
The biggest highlight is the twice-daily theatrical performances presented for audiences. Even those who do not understand Spanish will enjoy the lively shows re-enacting traditions and legends from a hundred years ago. Characters might range from a cacao boom plantation owner to a French-educated Ecuadorian heiress to a hoofed devil disguised as a gentleman. Worried about lunch? The kiosks offer a variety of tasty traditional snacks, a few of which might even be difficult to find anymore.

Walking through the park gives you a great idea of the wildlife and culture that are present in Guayaquil. Guayaquil is so modernized these days that you dont get to see the wildlife that is present all around the river and city. My last visit to Ecuador was 13 years ago and parks such as these are a great way to learn about the culture and environment in Guayaquil.
