Frutabar feels like a piece of Montañita has been transplanted to the big city. Instead of waves crashing, one might catch a view of the Guayas River slowly drifting by, but surfboards converted into tables definitely inspire a sense of being at the beach.

Serving light fare like sandwiches and “humitas” (Ecuador’s version of a cheese tamale), the highlight is definitely the huge “batidos” (fruit juice, milk, and ice)! Flavors range from basic strawberry and peach to coconut and mango. Choose from their tried-and-true flavor combinations or create your own. For a kick, try the “borojó”—a dark-brown, endemic fruit paste locally known as an aphrodisiac.

Splitting a batido and a “Macombo” sandwich (Ecua-style turkey stuffing on a toasted whole-wheat roll) is refreshing and filling for two on a hot, Guayaquil afternoon.
