Charo's Hostal has modern rooms with breathtaking ocean views and is right on the boardwalk. The hotel is close enough to the center of town (one and a half blocks), yet at enough of a distance so as to offer a restful night's sleep. There rooms have either street or ocean views, but all of them come with private bathrooms, hot water and air conditioning. The rooms are very clean and the staff friendly. The owners speak English and are helpful with any general questions about traveling and the town itself. The property is quite large with manicured gardens, hammocks, a pool, hot tub, outdoor bar and various plants and trees. At Charo's, you'll also find a restaurant and bar with reasonable prices and internet for $1.50 an hour. The food is excellent and service is very fast.

It's my third trip to Montañita and this my favorite place to stay. It's the only place with AC/TV there is also a heated swimming pool and a jacuzzi, which I enjoyed every day. The people in town are very friendly and the owners of Charo's go out of their way to help.
We picked Charo's Hostal in Montanita, since it seemed to be a nicer place with clean rooms, nice grounds, pool, A/C, private bath and hot water. We were not disappointed with this aspect although the price of $60 a night for a double was absolutely outrageous and completely overpriced (I hope this was only the Carnival price). However, the owners, Charo and her partner were absolutely awful people to deal with and I will hope that those considering staying here in the future will go somewhere else and support locals who actually care about their customers and believe in good service.Montanita is definitely not my scene and I was trying to escape the loud, roudiness of the Carnival atmosphere after dinner and relax with 2 girlfriends on my balcony for a while. We didnt have any alcohol or music but were just going to "chill". As I attempted to walk to my room with them, the owners rudely stopped us and told us that no guests were allowed in the hotel (keep in mind it was around 9 pm). When I politely asked them why, they became belligerent and defensive and told me that if I didn't like it, they would kick me out into the street and that, since they have travelled all over the world, it is standard that hotels never allowed guests in the rooms (I have travelled all over the world and never had a problem having guests on my balcony at 9 pm) and when my friend spoke to me in English, saying it was no problem, we could go somewhere else, the male owner turned to her and began yelling at her in Spanish (he obviously thought she was trying to push the issue with me, which she was not) and when I asked him to please calm down and stop yelling at her since she was on his side, Charo then told me I was a liar to my face (for saying he was yelling at her) and then told my friends I was a liar. It was the stupidest thing to have a conflict over but I have never been treated with so much disrespect and malice in my life, particularly when I never raised my voice at any time and simply wanted to understand the policy. It was infuriating to have to pay $60 to say in a place where the owners were so hostile towards me simply because I asked them why they had such a policy (which was posted no where in the hotel). Even more infuriating was their response that if they let my friends in, then they would also have to let in "big black men" into the hotel or else be called discriminatory (the insinuation that "big black men" are inherently a threat to security was in itself horribly racist and offensive). Needless to say these people are not nice at all and I don't think they deserve your future patronage.
The owner of this place is one of the nicest, kindest people I have met. The rooms here are clean, comfortable, nice, modern, and cute--balconies with hammocks over looking the ocean are an extreme added bonus. It was amazing to watch the sunset every evening from the hammock right on our balcony. I also had amazing breakfast here, and Charo keeps the kitchen clean and fly-free. This is by far the best place to stay in Montanita and is an extremely great value. I can't wait to go back!
THE SERIVCE WAS EXCELLENT AND THE STAFF WAS VERY FRIENDLY. CHARO'S IS A VERY CLEAN HOSTAL AND VERY AFFORDABLE. MY FAMILY AND I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH AND CANT WAIT TO GO BACK!! IT WILL BE ARE HOTEL CHOICE WHENEVER WE VISIT.
