Puerto López is one of the more established cities along the Ruta del Sol and is popular mainly for its close proximity to Isla de la Plata and the Parque Machililla. Although it is one of the cheapest spots to buy tours to Isla de la Plata, to go whale watching and to enter the Parque Machililla, Puerto López is not a great destination of itself. Its a dull, dusty town with just a handful of decent restaurants, bars and hotels. The beach is not nearly as inviting as nearby beaches, like Los Frailes to the north. However, you will probably find it necessary to stay at least one night in Puerto López.

This summer I am going to Puerto López so this report really helped me to learen more about where I am going to spent my summer.
Charming place, quiet and with a lot to do and see.
Nice fishing village, reminiscent of Ernest Hemingway stories. Great food, prices, and friendly people. Best place to stay is the Hotel Mantaraya, located 1.5 kilometers south on the main highway on a hill overlooking the ocean and Machalilla National Park. Great hotel with pool, waterfall, and excellent restaurant. Beautiful private grounds, rooms with a view, best service in Ecuador! A great place to eat in town is a pizza restaurant at the north end of the beach, hidden between a couple of touristy trinket kiosks.
It is good, basic but great!
It was a very unique little town with very friendly people and beautiful beaches within a short distance.
