This small island, 37 kilometers (23 mi) northwest of Puerto L贸pez, has earned the tag 鈥淭he Poor Man's Gal谩pagos.鈥 Comparisons are rather unfair but Isla de la Plata is well worth a day-trip to see the abundant bird-life. We also recommend skipping the whale-watching tours as you get a similar experience on the Isla de la Plata tour, plus you get to see the island. The island is home to blue-footed boobies, masked boobies and fragatas, and these are the species most frequently seen. There are also red-footed boobies and waved albatrosses, sometimes seen April to October. The island has a small colony of sea lions but you will be very lucky to see them.
You need to book a tour to see Isla de la Plata. Operators along the Malec贸n all offer similar tours, which include boat transport to the island, a guided walk on one of the bird-watching trails, a simple lunch of fruit and sandwiches, and snorkeling. These tours typically run $30-40.
