Parque Nacional Machalilla (55,037 hc/136,000 ac) is a nationally protected park in Manabà province that includes a stretch of beach and dry tropical forest as well as two islands, Isla de la Plata and Isla Salango north and south of Puerto López respectively. The park also encompasses Agua Blanca, a small community with a worthwhile archeological museum. Aside from the island tours, other activities include horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling and diving. The park is best during the month of July, when the weather is still sunny and the whales are arriving. As of January 2012, Parque Nacional Machalilla has free entry.
