Getting To and Away From Salinas

BY BUS

Transportes Occidentales (Ca. 18 de Septiembre OE2-14 and Versalles, Quito. Tel: 02-250-2734) has a direct bus to Salinas from Quito each night at 9:50 p.m., returning to Quito from Salinas at 8 p.m. TransEsmeraldas also has buses between Quito and Salinas, leaving Quito daily at 9:30 a.m., 8:50 p.m., 9:20 p.m. and 10:10 p.m., and from Salinas at 8 a.m., 7:45 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Alternatively, you can take a direct bus to La Libertad or Guayaquil and catch local transportation to Salinas.

Buses to Guayaquil (2.5 hr, $3.50) from Salinas leave every 15 minutes from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m. with one of three bus companies: Liberpesa, Cooperative Intercantonal Costa AzuL (CICA) or Cooperativa Libertad Peninsular (CLP). All leave from the small bus station on Avenida 5, between Calle 17 and Calle 18. To get to other destinations in the region, the best bet is to head to La Libertad, 30 minutes away from Salinas. This is the transport hub for the whole of the Santa Elena Peninsular, and from here, regular buses head up the coast to Manta, passing through Monta├▒ita and Puerto L├│pez on the way. To get to La Libertad (30 min, $0.25), take a local La Transisca, Horizon Peninsular or Trunsa bus. Alternatively, you can take a taxi to La Libertad ($2) or Santa Elena ($3-4).

BY AIR

TAME will start offering flights from Quito to the General Ulpiano Paez Airport near Salinas at the end of January 2013. Otherwise, you can fly into Guayaquil and take a coastal bus from there. Flights to Guayaquil with TAME leave from Quito several times a day and cost around $85 round-trip.
