Bartolome Visitor Site: the beach - Beach - Ecuador

Bartolome Island is home to a beautiful white sand beach with a gentle surf. The beach is at the base of the famous Pinnacle Rock, the unmistakable rock formation allegedly blasted into shape by American forces during World War Two. Bartolome is very narrow at this point, and there is a short, easy trail which leads to a scenic beach on the other side.

The beach is nice, but you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to snorkel while here. Beginners can putter around in the sheltered cove of the beach, but if you head out and around Pinnacle Rock, you’ll be rewarded with some truly awesome underwater life. Look for penguins, octopi (they’re tough to see but they’re there) sea lions, sharks, rays and much more. Even the underwater rubble from the bombing is now grown over with algae and seaweed and is beautiful. If you’re on one of the larger ships, they may have a glass-bottom boat for those who do not wish to snorkel.

The beach at Bartolome is very close to the steps leading to the pinnacle of the island: most ships will visit the beach after the sweaty climb to the top.

Hike Difficulty: 1/5. Easy trail from one beach to the other.

Snorkeling difficulty: Easy (near the beach) to Intermediate (deep water near Pinnacle Rock). Currents are not a danger here.
