Genovesa Visitor Site: Darwin Bay - Hiking - Ecuador

Darwin never visited Genovesa (Tower) Island in the northern part of the Galapagos archipelago, but he would have approved of the bay named after him. Because it is isolated from the other islands, Genovesa became home to colonies of birds, but relatively few land animals. For example, no Giant Tortoise species ever developed on Genovesa.

But the birds are a marvel to see. Frigates with their dazzling chest sacs, blue-footed and red-footed boobys, swallow-tailed gulls and more populate the sheltered Darwin Bay. The island is nicknamed “Bird Island” for good reason!

The easy trail winds in and out of nesting colonies of different bird species, allowing close-up photos of seldom-seen Galapagos species such as the Red-footed Booby. At one end of the trail, look for the deep tidal pools, which occasionally trap a sea turtle or ray.

Due to Genovesa’s relative isolation and lack of fresh water, it has remained uncontaminated by invasive species, and naturalist guides will likely ask guests to take extra care not to track anything into the delicate Genovesa ecosystem.

Hike difficulty: 2/5. Easy trail goes over some lava in places.
