Sierra Negra Volcano is the closest one to Puerto Villamil and it makes for a popular hike. It’s a day-long affair and you’ll definitely want to have a guide because it’s possible to lose the trail, especially if it gets rainy or foggy, which it often does.
Usually trips will take a van or truck or truck to a dropping-off place near the base of the mountain.
Sierra Negra is the oldest of Isabela’s volcanoes, and was active as recently as 2005. The hike passes through several different vegetation and geological zones. Generally, guided tours will reach the summit of Sierra Negra and also visit nearby Volcán Chico.
It’s possible to rent horses for the same trip: they usually cost about $10 more. Typically, you’ll pay roughly $35 for a tour of Sierra Negra on foot and $45 if you want a horse.
Trail Difficulty: 4/5: You should be in decent shape to attempt it.
