Urvina Bay - Beach Puerto Villamil - Ecuador

One of the most interesting visitor sites in Galapagos, Urvina Bay didn’t even exist in 1953. Well, the bay did, but not the stretch of land that is now the visitor site. You see, in 1954, there was a geologic event which lifted a few square kilometers up in the air, turning it into land. Passing fishermen investigated only to be driven off by the stink of dead fish, crustaceans and other marine life!

The visitor site trail thus winds its way through new-growth plants (the area is widely studied by those interested in which plants and animals are first to arrive on newly-formed land) as well as hunks of coral.

Hike: 3/5 It gets very hot and the trail is tricky in some places.

Highly Likely to see:

Brown Pelican

Marine Iguana

Probable to see:

Flightless Cormorant

Possible to see:

Land Iguana

Giant Tortoise
