Isabela Dive Sites - Diving Puerto Villamil - Ecuador

The SCUBA diving in Isabela is much more limited than in Puerto Ayora or Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. There is only one dive shop in Puerto Villamil – Isabela Dive Center – so you’re pretty much stuck with them, at least for now. They basically only go to three dive sites: Tortuga Island, Cuatro Hermanos, and Roca Viuda, although if you’re staying there for a few days and want to dive more, it’s possible they could find some more places to go. Isabela has excellent snorkeling, so it’s a good place to go if some members of your group dive and some prefer to snorkel.

Tortuga Island:

A moderate to strong current, but the underwater landscape is spectacular and the chance of seeing impressive marine life is good. Look for Hammerheads, Galapagos Sharks and large rays in addition to dazzling fish like Moorish Idols and Parrotfish.

Distance from Puerto Villamil: 30 minutes

Cuatro Hermanos:
Cuatro Hermanos is a spectacular site, where you’re likely to see seahorses, including the Giant Pacific Seahorse. There is an underwater cavern here, too, and there’s a good chance of seeing sharks and rays there. Enormous Manta Rays are also often seen as well as lobsters, octopus and, of course, plenty of colorful fish.

Distance from Puerto Villamil: 45 minutes

Roca Viuda

The charmingly-named “Widow Rock” is one of the most challenging dives in Galapagos and only for advanced divers: it’s on a wall and the currents are quite strong, occasionally carrying divers away from the site! Sometimes it’s worse than others. Those who do it are rewarded with a truly astounding collection of reef fish: thousands of them literally everywhere. Not so many sharks and large rays, but the fish more than make up for it.
