The Wall Of Tears/muro De Las Lagrimas - Monument Puerto Villamil - Ecuador

In the 1940’s and 1950’s, Isabela was a penal colony, and one look at the terrain around town will tell you that it must have been a harsh one. Prisoners who did not behave were sent to work on the “Wall of Tears,” a high wall outside of town built crudely with lava rocks and cement. The name “Wall of Tears” was given to it by the convicts, who must have suffered greatly in the hot sun while building it.

The Wall of Tears is not a protected visitor site: anyone can go. Just follow the trail outside of town or ask any local how to find it. It’s about seven kilometers outside of town, and you can reach it by bike. Bring water. The Wall of Tears is generally included in any tour of Puerto Villamil, but cruise ships stopping in town rarely go there.
