Mosquera Islet

Only about 600 meters long by 160 meters wide at its widest point, Mosquera is a small, rocky islet located between Baltra and North Seymour. It was once an underwater reef when a geologic force known as an uplift pushed it up above the water, forming an island. Because of this, Mosquera is very flat, not at all conical like other small Galapagos Islands.

There is a good beach on Mosquera, as well as a trail leading past a huge sea lion colony and a nesting area for Lava Gulls. It’s possible to snorkel off of the beach, and there’s a good chance swimmers will be joined by one of the numerous sea lions who make the island their home.

Mosquera is a popular dive site with operators from Puerto Ayora.

Trail Difficulty: 1/5: there is no real trail, just the chance to explore at leisure.

Highly Probable to see:

  • Sea Lion
  • Lava Gull
  • Blue-footed Booby
  • Sally Lightfoot Crabs
  • Marine Iguana

Probable to see:

  • Brown Pelican
  • Herons
