Cerro Crocker - Hiking Puerto Ayora - Ecuador

Cerro Crocker
Crocker Hill is the highest point on Santa Cruz Island, which isn’t saying much (860m). It’s fairly easy to hike, and you’ll be rewarded at the top with a good view of Puerto Ayora. The terrain is leafy and green (and muddy when it rains, so bring good shoes). Part of the trail goes through agricultural areas, and part is the Galapagos National Park.
A guide is legally not needed, but you’ll definitely want one so that you don’t get lost. Also, the trail winds its way through several vegetation zones, including some rare endemic plants and introduced species. Without a guide to tell you what they are, you might just assume that they are just some plants and walk right past them!
The Cerro Crocker hike is your best chance to see the elusive Galapagos Rail, a bluish purple-black bird that hangs out mostly on the ground.
