Lava Tunnels - Hiking Puerto Ayora - Ecuador

Lava Tunnels are natural volcanic rock formations left behind when a stream of lava flows out of a volcano. The outer magma cools while the inner magma continues to flow, resulting in an underground stone tube of sorts. There are lava tunnels all over Galapagos, of all shapes and sizes.
There are several lava tunnels in the highlands near Puerto Ayora. They’re often located nearby the farms where the Giant Tortoises hang out, so tours to see the tortoises will usually stop at a lava tunnel as well. The ones usually visited by tourists either have lights installed or are short enough that visibility is not a problem.
The lava tunnels are interesting, but not so much so that you’d really want to go out of your way to see one unless you’re a geology buff. Best to catch one on a tortoise or highland tour. The tunnels are popular with owls, so keep your eyes open near the entrance.
