Cerro Brujo, or “Warlock Hill” is named after the Vermilion Flycatcher, which is named Pájaro Brujo or “Warlock Bird” in Spanish. The hill used to be home to a handful of these colorful birds, although it’s very rare to see one there now.
Instead, visitors will have to settle for the marvelous sandy beach and sea lion colony there. There is no trail as such, only a small one that connects the first beach, where pangas land, with the second one, where visitors can swim and snorkel. The beach is gorgeous and wide and great for a stroll. At low tide, rocks and tidal pools are exposed in the area between the two beaches: this is a great place to look for wading birds like Oystercatchers or Herons.
It’s possible to snorkel here, although the sandy bottom and waves make it unlikely you’ll see much other than a few fish or a stingray or two if you’re lucky. Head towards the rocks and go a little deeper if you want to see anything.
Stay clear of the sand dunes behind the beach to preserve the vegetation.
Trail Difficulty: 1/5. The rocks and dunes between the two beaches can be slightly tricky, especially if you have to go around a sleeping sea lion.
