Cerro Tijeretas - Hiking San Cristobal - Ecuador

Cerro Tijeretas gets its name from the Frigate Birds, commonly called “fragatas” but also called “tijeretas” (“cerro” means hill). Chances are you’ll see some frigate birds flying around. Cerro Tijeretas is located on the trail behind the interpretation center on San Cristobal. There are stairs to climb the hill, and once you’re up there you’ll see Shipwreck Bay as well as the ocean: the view is well worth the short walk to the top. If you’re going to see all the points of interest on the trail – an old artillery piece, the Cabo de Hornos beach, a statue of Charles Darwin – go to Cerro Tijeretas first, because the whole trail is visible from the top and it will help orient you.

At the base of the hill is a small, nearly-enclosed lagoon that is perfect for snorkeling, particularly for beginners. There are no waves or current, just underwater rocks where fish and other marine life like to hang out. The trail leads down to a small platform on the water where sea lions may be lounging. There isn’t much space on the little platform, so if a lot of people are there you may have to wait your turn to get into or out of the water (to avoid this, go in the morning). Don’t leave valuables behind while snorkeling.

Cerro Tijeretas is part of the national park, but you don’t need a guide to go there. The trail from the interpretation center is very easy to follow.

Trail Difficulty: 2/5. There are some steps to get to the top of the hill, but nothing treacherous.
