Galapaguera De Cerro Colorado/red Hill Tortoise Breeding Center - Other Activity San Cristobal - Ecuador

The Cerro Colorado (“red hill”) Giant Tortoise breeding center is a great place to see San Cristobal Giant Tortoises in the wild (semi-wild, anyway). There is a small breeding center with a handful of tiny tortoises (ask to see “Genesis,” the first one to hatch in the center a few years ago) and behind the building is a trail through the dense brush. Along the trail you can expect to see several fully-grown tortoises eating, napping, wallowing in the mud, etc. It’s one of the best places in all of Galapagos to see them: they’re penned in at the Charles Darwin Research Station and the breeding center on Isabela, but here you can go right up to them for a good photo (no touching!).

This breeding center is very important because the San Cristobal Giant Tortoises are in grave danger due to introduced animals including goats and cats: it is hoped that the consistent release of tortoises into the wild will stabilize the population until the pests can be eradicated.

Keep your eyes open for birds: they love the scrubby trees. You may see finches, mockingbirds and other small land birds flitting around.

You can go to the breeding center from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno: it’s about a 40 minute drive. It’s often included on day tours of the area which also include Playa Chino and the Cerro Colorado Lookout. Cruise ships often take their passengers there, especially if they’re picking up new passengers at the San Cristobal airport.

How to get there: You’ll have to arrange transportation from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno: negotiate with a taxi driver.
