Galapaguera Natural (natural Giant Tortoise Breeding Center) - Other Activity San Cristobal - Ecuador

On the northern end of San Cristobal Island is a natural protected zone for the San Cristobal Giant Tortoises. A trail runs from the beach into the interior for about three miles: visitors turn around and take the same path back out. The trail is tough and most cruise ships do not include it on their itineraries (if your itinerary says “galapaguera” it’s probably referring to the one at Cerro Colorado, which is much easier to visit). The only way to do this trail is to contract a guide in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and the only way to reach the trail is by boat.

Trail Difficulty: 5/5: the trail itself isn’t too bad, but it’s long, it gets really hot there and there is no breeze. Bring water and sunscreen, but try to avoid scented sunscreen as it may attract the aggressive wasps that are common along the trail.
