V!VA User‘s Description
This marshland fills most of northern Paraguay. Developed by German-speaking Mennonite farmers, there is also a substantial indigenous population. Bird-watching is spectacular in this rough, practically untouched terrain that is best seen via four-wheel drive. This is truly the wilderness of Paraguay.
With a population of around 4,100, Filadelfia is the largest Mennonite town in the Chaco. The Unger Museum features pioneer life in the Chaco and has indigenous artifacts as well. There is also a decent craft shop in town. Filadelfia is a great launching point to exploring the Chaco and a good spot to learn about the unique immigrant culture that has developed there. German is the predominant language.
