The Arequipa and Colca Canyon region is packed with things to see and do for travelers with all tastes.
Arequipa teems with colonial architecture, beautiful churches and interesting museums. The narrow lanes of San Lázaro and Yarahuara invite hours of exploration. All of this makes Arequipa an inviting place to stay a while and study Spanish at one of the city’s decent schools or volunteer. For the outdoorsy traveler, Arequipa’s activities include horseback riding, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking and climbing.
For those heading out of town, Cañón del Colca also offers hiking, climbing, rafting, horseback riding and climbing opportunities. In addition, there is the chance to see the mighty condor soaring over one of the world’s deepest canyons. Colca Canyon has its own historical attractions, too: ancient ruins and 17th-century churches. A further draw to Colca is the living culture of the Collagua and Cabana nations.
Travelers with more time and a desire to go where few others tread, should head further north to Cotahuasi Canyon. Even deeper than Cañón del Colca, Cotahuasi offers many of he same adventures, without the touristy atmosphere.
