Transportation
Most navigation of the Colca Canyon valley will require a layover in the beautiful whitewashed city of Arequipa. Arequipa may be accessed by air from Cusco or Lima and by bus from Cuzco, Juliaca or Puno, though train services may be reintroduced in the future (check www.perurail.com). Overnight buses to and from Arequipa are not advisable due to many reported robberies in addition to weather related incidents during the wet season. Lying at the base of the canyon, Chivay serves as the most popular starting point for treks to the Colca Canyon. Two hours by bus further along the road lies Cabanaconde, Chivay´s peaceful sister to the south of the canyon. Cruz del Cóndor is best reached from here.
