Safety in Arequipa and the Colca Canyon

Petty theft is common in Arequipa, so be sure to leave anything of value back at the hostel. Also, beware of unregistered ticket vendors who may try to sell you fake entrance tickets and especially all-in-one package deals to points of interest around the canyon. Always check weather conditions before trekking, especially during the wet season as trails become more difficult. Travelers should also think twice about taking an overnight bus into or out of the area during the wet season, as road conditions worsen and accident rates increase.
