Shopping
V!VA User‘s Description
As the center of Peru's thriving wool industry, Arequipa offers a number of wool and fine clothing shops. One of the best places to start any shopping adventure is Pasaje Catedral, an inviting street behind the cathedral. Offering a wide selection of men's and women's sweaters, coats, and scarves, Millma's Baby Alpaca is one of the nicer shops in town. For baby alpaca sweaters, scarves, and pashminas head to Links Fashions. Michell is a large outlet store that, in addition to selling sweaters, scarves, and coats, also has people to demonstrate the process of hand-sorting alpaca fiber and loom weaving. Of course, if you're really anxious to learn the trade of wool-sorting you can arrange a visit to one of the factories or highland ranches specializing in alpaca and vicuña.
El Centro Turistico Comercial de Arequipa is the premier shopping center of Arequipa. Located at Mercaderes 141 (half a block from the Main Square) they sell handicrafts, alpaca garments, jewelry, silverware, souvenirs, decorations, chocolates and handbags. Services include internet, money exchange, call center, video room and more.
A half block off of the Plaza de Armas on Mercaderes street is Arequipa's one-stop shopping mall for tourists. It's loaded with a wide variety of shops that carry a dizzying selection high quality handicrafts, alpaca ware, jewelery, house decorations and most anything you'd want to buy to take home from your trip. There's also a restaurant, Internet cafe, and even a small auditorium for group presentations. If you're only going to shop for souvenirs in one place in Arequipa, this is it.
