Less experienced trekkers and climbers seeking to summit a high altitude peak should head to Chachani (6,095 m). Just a three hour drive from Arequipa, this gorgeous snow-capped volcano is perhaps also one of the easiest 6,000 meter peaks in all of Latin America. The road from Arequipa ascends to 5,100 meters, from where climbers make the two or more hour climb to base camp. From camp, the summit is another five to six hours, a climb that is usually made the following morning. In spite of its reputation for being an easy peak to summit, it is still a high altitude climb and should be treated with caution. An ice ax and crampons are the equipment of choice, and it is recommended that a guide accompany you, which is easy to arrange with one of the many Arequipa tour companies. The truly fit can climb Chachani in one day from Arequipa, but two days is recommended for the un-acclimatized, or anyone who wants to actually enjoy the views. Though Chachani is less popular than its neighbor, El Misti, it is still a well-trodden trek. You may be lucky enough to have the mountain to yourself, but be prepared to share it.
