One of the most impressive historical monuments in Peru, the Franciscan Recoleta Monastery dates back to 1648. This museum offers a microcosmic illustration of the two dominant cultures that shaped Peru. One of these is pre-Columbian, featuring Nasca, ChavÃn and Chancay pottery, stones and mummies. The other is the legacy of the Catholic Church, with an extensive display of religious art and the monastery’s library, which houses no less than 20,000 books. In the three and a half centuries since its creation, the Recoleta Monastery has been rebuilt and renovated following various earthquakes that impacted the region.
