El Misti

Hiking, Trekking, Climbing

V!VA User‘s Description

El Misti, the closest volcano to Arequipa, offers a fairly straightforward opportunity to summit a high peak. Trekkers should start their journey from the hydroelectric plant, after first registering with the police there. Due to reports of assaults in 2001, climbers should avoid the route that starts near the outskirts of town. From the entrance give yourself a day to reach the Monte Blanco shelter, at 4,800 meters. Prepare for an early morning, preferably dawn, to make the 4-to-6-hour climb to Misti’s summit by 11 a.m., before mists blanket the mountain and obscure the view. If you start your descent by noon it is possible to reach the hydroelectric plant by 6 p.m. If you're not feeling quite up for a six hour trek, then take a jeep from 3,300 meters to the end of the rough road, and make the 45-minute hike to the campground at 4, 600 meters. Be aware that there's only space here for three tents, and that you should bring plenty of food, water, and inclement weather gear. Further information can be obtained from Arequipa tour companies.
