Arequipa Things to See and Do

Arequipa has silently become one of Peru’s most popular visitor draws: a gorgeous colonial city constructed of white volcanic stone with pleasant parks and friendly people. No one thing to do or see defines Arequipa (like the enigmatic Nasca Lines in Nasca, for example). Instead, there are many lower-key activities that can easily fill a week or more in this lovely city and region.

While strolling around the historic center, stop into the Catedral, Monasterio de Santa Catalina and other churches, and the well-preserved colonial mansions that are open to the public. The city also features some good museums, including the Museo Santuarios Andinos and Museo de Arte Contémporaneo. Cultural centers offer concerts, exhibits and other events. Many museums have extended hours in the high seasons. It is customary (expected) to tip guides at museums, casonas and other sites ($2 per person, or $4 for group of 3-10 persons).
