Cultural Tour

By Ricardo Segreda

Built in 1621, only less than thirty years after Columbus set foot in the Americas, this stone mill, powered by a nearby waterfall, is still in operation, grinding grains and flours, after being restored in 1973. This historical landmark is worth visiting both for its historical architecture, as well as the natural beauty surrounding it, from the alpacas and vicuñas that freely wander outside to the spectacular view of the Misti and Chachani volcanoes. The Sabandia Mill is about five miles from Arequipa’s downtown, in the Sabandia Valley, and can best be accessed by taxis or tour buses.
