With its Moroccan theme, the café and tavern Ras el hanout (subtitle: "and the 40 flavors") is a perfect compliment to the Spanish colonial architecture of Arequipa. Owner Egmond Gamero offers an elegant Moorish ambience, from the old-world incense in the air to classic North African dishes, such as Haira soup (with beef, cilantro, chick peas, lentils, and lemon), or spicy tagine kefta meatballs, or artichoke heart with egg filling, mozzarella, tuna, lemon, and falafel. Exotic teas served from long-necked tea kettles and narguilas, middle-eastern hookahs for smoking tobacco (only) add to the fun.
