Arequipeños are famous throughout Peru for their sumptuous cooking, and many restaurants in the area specialize in traditional regional specialties. The historic center is chocked full of great-value casual restaurants, and even the best eateries are affordable. Whether you're in the mood for Peruvian, Turkish, French, Italian, or Mexican Arequipa is ready to accommodate your taste buds (and your wallet). If you get a chance, try the most famous local dish: ocopa a la arequipeña. This traditional appetizer consists of boiled potatoes drenched in a cheese and peanut sauce. At some places you can dive into the mouth-watering dishes while your eyes feast on spectacular views of the surrounding volcanoes.
