Its name in Spanish translates to 鈥淢ansion of the Founder.鈥 The founder in question being Don Garc铆 Manuel de Carbajal, who was among many knights ordered by Francisco Pizarro to establish cities across Peru as a means of consolidating the territory under Spanish rule. Don Carbajal accomplished a relatively peaceful settlement in this high and dry region. His mansion here was later appropriated by the Jesuits and then by a captain in the Spanish army. It fell into disuse and neglect before being restored by landmark preservationists in 1978, who hoped to revive 500 years worth of Peruvian history, exquisite architecture, artwork, and furnishings.
