The Cabanaconde-Andagua Trek through the northwestern sector of Colca Canyon and to the Valley of the Volcanoes is challenging but worth the effort. The route passes through unspoiled scenery with craggy volcanic peaks, isolated villages, terraces, lava flows and people in traditional dress. Along the way it is sometimes possible to spot condors, eagles, deer and vizcacha.
The trail heads out from Cabanaconde, through the villages of Choco, Miña and Chachas, finally arriving in Andagua anywhere from four to six days later. While the hike is only approximately 60 km, it is recommended to do this hike over five days as the terrain makes for difficult hiking in places with steep ascents and drops. The hike is best enjoyed in the dry season, between May and September. Accommodation along the way varies between camping and simple homestays in the little villages.
