Trekking
The Cabanaconde-Andagua Trek into the Colca Canyon is challenging but worth the effort. The route passes through unspoiled scenery with craggy volcanic peaks, isolated villages, terraces, lava flows and people in traditional costume. Along the way it is sometimes possible to spot condor, eagles, deer and vizcacha. The trail usually heads out from Cabanaconde, through the villages of Choco, Miña and Chachas, finally arriving in Andagua anywhere from four to six days later.
While the hike is only approximately 60 km, it is recommended to do this hike over five days as the terrain makes for difficult hiking in places with steep ascents and drops. The hike is best enjoyed in the dry season, between May and September. Accommodation along the way varies between camping and simple homestays in the little villages and the hikes usually include the cost of mules to carry the luggage, the guide, accommodation and food. Take care on the trek. There are risks of altitude sickness due to the steep rises and decents, sunburn and dehydration. Make sure you take a sleeping bag, warm clothes (it can get chilly at altitude at night), rain wear, decent footwear, a flashlight, a hat, sunblock, toiletries and insect repellent. Also, don't forget snacks and water—distances between villages can be lengthly.
