V!VA User‘s Description
At 3,652 meters, Chivay is the most popular entry point for the Colca Canyon. As a tourist haven, the town has a variety of good hotels, restaurants, and bus services. Due to its popularity, however, the town is a bit touristy and shows the wear of world traveler traffic. Those in search of a slightly more laidback atmosphere should head to nearby Cabanaconde, which is also closer to the Cruz del Cóndor. To its credit, Chivay has the only Internet in Colca, the best-equipped clinic, and is the headquarters for police and mountain rescue. The area also boasts excellent hiking and trekking opportunities.
In addition to being the first village on the edge of the canyon, Chivay is also the major point linking the two sides. On the opposite side of the bridge is the old Inca road to Cusco, which is marked by a path that heads up to ancient stone grain stores. You’ll also find several Inca storehouses on the hillside above the trail. If you’re up for a wander, head to Chivay's 18th century church Nuestra Señora Asunción, or to the bridge with Inca foundations, which is located just outside of town.
The area's most popular attraction is also located outside of town. Just 2 kilometers from Chivay, are the thermal hot springs (4:30 a.m. - 7 p.m., $3 foreigners), a great place to relax after a long day of exploring the canyon. This enticing thermal hot-spot has five hot pools, including two new ones designed for tourists. All are clean, though at night they are teeming with tourists. The best hot pools in the area, and some might say all of Peru, are located at Colca Lodge, half an hour drive away.
