V!VA User‘s Description

There is plenty to see and do in the Colca Canyon area. The reason that most people travel to the Colca Canyon is to try and spot the magestic condor at La Cruz del Condor. Other than condor watching and taking in the spectacular scenery at the Valley of the Volcanoes, there are countless opportunities for hiking and trekking, with some decent hikes starting from Cabanaconde. There are hikes that last for just a day or two, but also five or six day hikes starting from Cabanaconde. Stay at any of the little local towns and you will find interesting local activities. At Chivay there are hotsprings. Close to Chivay, Coporaque features one of the oldest churches in Peru. In addtion to all of this there are horseback riding, kayaking and whitewater rafting opportunities in the canyon. The people of this area have a history that goes back centuries. Maybe you can get to witness some of this by spectating at any of the Colca Canyon festivals are still celebrated exist today. For history buffs, the Toro Muerto Petrogylphs are also worth a visit.
