Off Colca Canyon's Beaten Track: Hostal Gloria in San Juan Chuccho

Peru, Arequipa and the Colca Canyon, Colca Canyon

review, cheap, Colca

After trekking down into the canyon and crossing the bridge, many people choose to rest for the first night in San Juan. This tiny, magical village, draped with trees rich with fruit, flowers and lichen, offers some sweet accommodation in the form of one-room cabins. Gloria’s place is a 15-minute walk to the left after you cross the bridge, with helpful hand-painted arrows on the odd rock directing the way.

We spent one night here and would highly recommend it. Gloria and her husband are a sweet couple who took great care of us. Our bed was very comfy, we had ample blankets, and Gloria gave us candles in the evening as there in no electricity in the rooms.

She cooked us a delicious dinner of filling soup and llama steak, followed by mate. We sat in one of the covered communal areas where there is electric light, so we could read and relax comfortably. She also has a shop selling essentials such as snacks, water and alcohol.

The accommodation has about ten cabins and extra room for tents. There are clean toilets and showers. The water wasn’t hot, but maybe I needed to wait longer for it to heat up.

We slept very well as it’s incredibly peaceful in the canyon. In the morning, Gloria prepared breakfast for us at a time that we chose – tasty, thick pancakes with banana and chocolate, and a selection of hot drinks.

Prices are around $4 per person, per night, and around $2 for breakfast and $4 for dinner. But it depends on when you go – we actually negotiated a lower price than this, as it was quiet.
