Huambo is located in the lower part of Colca Canyon, in the Caylloma province. During its very sunny days the men wear reed hats, and the clear nights have made this a favorite of astronomers. The region is home to much exotic flora, including the Queñua tree, the lloque tree, cactuses, and rare fruits such as the membrillo and the vicchun, a.k.a. the Andean papaya.
The range of native animals includes the tarucas (a type of reindeer), vicuñas, the vizcacha (the Andean rabbit), the huallata (the Andean duck), many exotic reptiles and amphibians, and even shrimp.
