Huambo

Altitude: 3,332 m / 10,929 ft, Population: 1,535, Phone Code: 054

Huambo is located in the lower part of Cañón del Colca. The canyon’s deepest point, measuring 4,160 meters (13,645 ft), is near town, at Satay. This town is quite different than other ones in Colca Canyon. The climate here is warmer. Daytime temperatures are 22-24ºC (72-75ºF) and at night, dip to 4-7ºC (39-45ºF). During its very sunny days the men wear reed hats, and the clear nights have made this a favorite of astronomers. The town’s inhabitants are of Quechua and Spanish descent. The region is home to much exotic flora, including the queñua and lloque trees, cactuses, and rare fruits such as the membrillo (quince) and vicchun (Andean papaya).

The countryside around Huambo offers several nice day hikes. A five-hour walk in the valley below town takes visitors to Yanacoto, agricultural terraces, waterfalls and Chuquibamba-culture ruins. Also five hours from Huambo is Lago de Mucurca (4,310 m / 14,137 ft altitude), in a landscape full of meteorite craters, surrounded by Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya and Ampato volcanoes. Taruca (north Andean deer), vicuña, vizcacha, huallata (Andean duck) and the occasional flamingo, as well as other wildlife may be observed here.

Hayakima, a complex of Cabana ruins located atop a hill near Chinini village, are a one-hour walk ferom Huambo. Another outing is to Cancó (1,820 m / 5,970 ft), a small oasis at the confluence of the Colca and Huambo rivers; the Class IV-V whitewaters provide great rafting opportunities.

Lodging is limited to Hospedaje Santa Rosa (Av Prosperidad s/n) and the city-run Hospedaje Municipal (Plaza de Armas). Four restaurants and a number of grocery shops provide food services. Local guides offer trips out to local sites; horses and mules are also available for hire. A useful website is: www.huambo-colca.com.

The village patron saint, San Lorenzo Mártir, is honored August 10. Carnaval and Semana Santa are also important festivals.

Other neighborhoods in Colca Canyon: Coporaque, Cabanaconde, Chivay, Maca, Pinchollo and Yanque.
