Hostal la Merced - Hostel Carhuaz - Peru

This efficient and relatively cheap hostel is adequate if you don’t expect too much and can put up with one curious idiosyncrasy: there is a 40-gallon container of water in every bathroom. Why? Due to a limited infrastructure, the city of Carhuaz shuts off its water supply between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. So it’s the container and a bucket that will take of your ablutions and other water-related needs until the sun comes up.

The owners seem to be proudly Roman Catholic: the lobbies and hallways highlight the Sacred Virgin and the late Pope John Paul II. Still, the rooms have cable TV, nice views of the surrounding valley, and 24-hour service.
