Hiking and Trekking Acclimatization - Hiking - Peru

Before heading out with your backpack, even very experienced adventurers should follow a few common sense steps to ensure a safe journey. The most important is to acclimatize gradually.

The first camps along many of the treks are high enough to trigger altitude sickness. It’s advisable to spend your first couple days in Huaraz or one of the other towns taking it easy and exploring some of the lower-altitude sites in the area. An easy walk up to the Mirador Rataquena above Huaraz is a great way to spend the afternoon, or you can catch a combi (minibus) going east from Huaraz to the Callán Pass (4,225 m/13,862 ft). A network of trails and dirt roads head from here back to Huaraz, and are perfect for a less strenuous day of exploration.

On your second day acclimatizing, you could make your way to Laguna Churup (4,485 m/14,715 ft) or to nearby Quebrada Quilcayhuanca.
