Huayhuash Trek - Hiking - Peru

With some of the most pristine mountain scenery, this 160-kilometer (99.5 mi) trek weaves past turquoise, trout-filled lakes, through wide open grasslands and up knee-jarring ridgelines. The 12-day circuit starts in the village of Chiquián and makes a loop around the entire range. Remarkable views accompany eight high passes between 4,600 and 5,000 meters (15,090 to 16,400 ft); if the scenery doesn’t take your breath away, the ascents certainly will. Because the trail is long and quite demanding, it is only recommended for acclimatized individuals in good physical condition.

Recently built roads from Chiquián to Llamac and Huallanca offer shortened versions of the original hike. Trekkers can now start in Huallanca to the north (between Huaraz and Huánuco), or catch a combi to Matacancha. From here most people head up the Cacanpunta Pass (4,700 m or 15,420 ft) to the first campsite at Lago Mitacocha. This route encompasses about half the Huayhuash circuit, and is a good option if you’re pressed for time. If you’ve got time to kill, then definitely consider doing the whole loop; beauty of this magnitude deserves more than a passing glance. Both the Chiquián and Huallanca starting points are equipped with hotel and restaurant services for travelers.
