Monumento Nacional Wilcahuaín - Ruin Huaraz - Peru

Just eight kilometers (5 mi) north-east of Huaraz is the Wilcahuaín archaeological site. The ruins date to the Wari Empire, which dominated the region from 700 to 1000 AD. Gravity-defying vertical stone slabs and several smaller structures lead into finely constructed sepulchral stone chambers. The temple is done in Tiahuanaco style and means “grandson’s house” in Quechua. Mummified bodies of prominent leaders were once laid to rest in the chambers of these three-story structures and kept dry using a complicated ventilation system.

Compared to other ruins in Peru, the Wilcahuaín ruins require very little imagination as they are remarkably well preserved. Tours of the ruins are available for an additional fee.

To get there, take a combi from the corner of Jirón 13 de Diciembre and Jirón Comercio ($0.30, 30 mins). A taxi from Huaraz costs approximately $3 one-way.
