Trek the world-famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, one of the most popular destinations in South America. Suspended high above the Río Urubamba, the clouds which often sweep in to cover the ruins only add to its enigma.

At an altitude of 3,505 meters (11,500 ft), set amidst a valley of mysterious cities in the clouds, Cusco provides a good initiation into the Incan way of life. Check out the mixed Spanish-Incan architecture and the excellent museums dedicated to Incan culture

Visit Ollantaytambo, the only fully preserved, not to mention still inhabited, Incan town in Perú. Climb the sixteen stepped terraces which are a testament to the Inca’s mastery of stonework and agricultural planning.

Load up on souvenirs such as weavings and ceramics at the famous Pisac market, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

The Inca Trail is not the only option for trekking in the region. There are a number of alternative treks that see fewer crowds and often cost less, and some also finish in Aguas Calientes, the town just below Machu Picchu.
