Located 28 kilometers northwest of Cusco, the sleepy Andean town of Chinchero is one of the best places in the valley for Andean textiles and basic goods like hats, gloves, and shawls. Commanding sweeping views of the Salcantay and Vilcabamba mountain ranges, this traditional Andean village will captivate visitors with its natural beauty and cultural integrity. In the main square, which is dominated by a formidable Inca wall composed of huge stones and 10 trapezoidal niches, you’ll find the famous Chinchero markets. Here you’ll be greeted by bustling artisan sellers, dressed in traditional clothing, and eager to win your attention (and secure a purchase). The market is divided into two sections, one focusing on handicrafts and the other on produce. Even on Sunday, the busiest day, the Chinchero’s markets seem more authentic than the Pisac markets. For the best bargaining chances, visit the markets on Tuesday or Thursday, when there are fewer crowds. If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, you may want to check out Pisac market, which is bigger and more flamboyant.
