Q'ewar Project

Location:
Cusco, Peru

Other Activity

By Ricardo Segreda

Among the volunteer opportunities in Cusco is the Q'ewar Project, a non-profit that employs indigenous women to make high-quality, hand-made dolls for export to markets in Europe and North America. Attempting to redress issues of ethnocentrism, sexism and ignorance, the project pays a fair wage to women. Their dolls, made from alpaca and sheep wool, use ancient techniques for dying, incorporating indigenous foliage and even insects. Volunteers are needed for their social development and day care programs, and knowledge of Spanish is a must. At the local chapter of the South American Explorers Club, former volunteers have written very favorably of their time with the Q'ewar Project.
