Treat yourself to a train ride through spectacular Andean landscape as a pleasant, more stylish alternative to the bus. The train runs in both directions from either Cusco to Puno via Juliaca or vice versa, a journey that takes nine and a half hours.

When you arrive at the station, your attendant is already outside your carriage, waiting to welcome you aboard (regardless of carriage class). As you begin your journey, the attendant becomes your waiter and you can select between a wide selection of beverages (for which you have to pay). At the same time you can order lunch if you wish, choosing between a set lunch of $15, various entrees, and burgers or sandwiches for $6 or so.

The journey passes through landscapes that are stunningly beautiful. At La Raya, the highest point of the journey, you may alight for a few moments to buy souvenirs from the locals, anxious to make a buck. Passing through the altiplano you can observe campesinos herding sheep, camelids and cattle, as they have for decades. Beats a cramped bus any day.

Travel Tips: The staff seem to prefer that you pay with dollars on the train.

Price Description: The Andean Explorer ticket costs $143 and includes food and an outdoor observation carriage. The Backpacker ticket costs $22 and doesn't include food or the observation carriage.

Relative price: Expensive

Days Closed:Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday

You Need to Bring: If you don't want to spend too much, bring food with you onto the train. Prices are quoted in dollars, NOT soles. Don't get confused.

Traveler Reviews of Train Cusco to Puno

Top service

Rating: 100%

The service on the train was great. I was in backpacker class, but even there the service was good. Our train got delayed due to an unfortunate accident on the line, but the staff kept the passengers happy with free beverages. As this meant we were late arriving into Puno, they made us a free bowl of soup too. Aside from all of that, the beauty of the journey was amazing.
