Owned and operated by the prestigious Orient Express Hotels group, the Monasterio is the most luxurious hotel in Cusco. Two blocks north of the Plaza de Armas, the hotel complex was formerly the San Antonio Abad seminary, built over 300 years ago and which until recently served as an actual monastery and seminary. The seminary foundations themselves were constructed on Inca stonework. The monks' cells have been converted into gorgeous, comfortable rooms, the courtyards have ancient trees and much of the colonial art and paintings still adorn the walls and hallways. You can live like the monks did-except much, much better. The Hotel Monasterio has even installed a system to pump more oxygen into the rooms to counteract the effects of altitude sickness on its guests. The hotel is huge; it has over 100 rooms in addition to several suites. There are two restaurants and a bar on the premises as well as an original chapel that is still considered to be consecrated ground. There is an on-site travel agency which can arrange all sorts of tours.
