If you're bored of just taking the regular bus, one option is to upgrade to the Inka Express. This is a bus that runs between Cusco and Puno, and vice versa. The buses are very comfortable and for the price, you get free tea, coffee and mineral water for the entire trip.

What's special about this bus is that it makes five stops during the journey. You first stop at the stunning little town of Andahuaylillas to visit the church of St Peter and St Paul. After that, you stop at Raqchi, an Inca temple ruins. Lunch is buffet-style, with Peruvian treats at Sicuani. After lunch, you stop at the highest point of the trip, at La Raya, where the vendors congregate to sell you alpaca slippers and Andean weavings. During the last leg of the journey, you stop at Pukara, where you visit a museum. The excursions run in the opposite order for those heading Cusco-bound from Puno.

All-in, the journey takes around 10 hours, a whopping 4 hours longer than the normal bus. Costs are also much higher, and often your ticket does not include entrance fees to the sites. However, this is a great option if you have the money and you have kids on board. While younger kids won't be too thrilled about the historical sites, they will appreciate getting off the bus and having a change of scenery every hour or so.

I was traveling with my husband and 2 year old daughter. Obviously my child had no interest in the ruins, but she liked being able to run around and it turned a 6 hour bus hell, into a 10 hour pleasant bus journey for us.
