Anyone interested in a more thorough appreciation of Machu Picchu should pay a visit to this museum, named after Peruvian archeologist Manuel Chávez Ballón. Most of Machu Picchu's artifacts were removed by American explorer Hiram Bingham and kept at Yale University; as a result, the focus of the museum is on the discovery of Machu Picchu and the findings therein. There are some remaining artifacts, as well as maps and video presentations. The botanical garden across the way showcases orchids and other flora. The museum is tucked away by the Puente Ruinas, a 20 minute walk from town.
